Abstract

The growth of Pentecostalism in Brazil is a growing phenomenon since the last century and that unfolds not only in advances in the religious field, but also in media influence and massive political-party participation and, furthermore, power to intervene in the civil field and defend their institutional interests. Thinking about the projection and reach of these religious groups in the political field, this paper proposes to offer some initial contributions about the relations between evangelicals and politics in Brazil, mobilizing the concept of political culture. Thus, we seek to identify the way in which Pentecostals and Neopentecostals appropriate central elements of Brazilian political culture, and how they incorporate these practices in their political actions, analyzing how cultural traditions rooted within Brazilian political relations, such as patrimonialism and clientelism, coexist with current social phenomena and influence present political experiences.
