Abstract

This essay discusses the issues surrounding the functions of history teaching in contemporary times, considering that the current postmodern condition of Western Civilization, which questioned the modern categories of knowledge and their goals, allowing for new reflections, also gave rise to the development of revisionist and even negationists practices. Although there is agreement here on the importance of reviewing the canons of historiography, it is necessary to discuss its limits and intentions, valuing, if not scientificity, but ethics and the commitment to verisimilitude with the past. In this aspect, the teaching of History would have an indispensable role in this operation around an integral education for the 21st century.
