Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, Fortaleza attracted hundreds of young people in search of domestic work and better living conditions. Coming from other cities and states, they were destined for the home of relatives, acquaintances and, in some cases, arrived aimlessly. This migratory flow, combined with periods of drought, made the number of hovels and huts grow in the surroundings of the city known for its beautification. The purpose of this article is to discuss the contrast between the remodeling process in Fortaleza and the precarious living conditions of domestic workers. Reports from newspapers of the time, codes of posture and images from the company were essential to understand this dynamic.
