Abstract

Abstract: The article aims to analyze the popular revolt in 1821 known as the cerca-igrejas uprising in Cariri, Ceará. The movement was characterized by the invasion of different villages by people qualified as cabras and freeded mulattos who surrounded the religious temples to prevent the oath to the constitution that was being drafted in Portugal, a consequence of the 1820 Revolution. It is argued that, despite having been a reaction against the changes, the uprising of the cerca-igrejas aimed to affirm the freedom of the subaltern strata of society and constituted a significant moment in the struggles for independence, mobilizing and stimulating new popular initiatives.
